About Sclerotherapy for Spider/Varicose Veins
Varicose veins are abnormal blood vessels characterized by their enlarged and tortuous appearance. They can occur anywhere but they are mostly seen on the legs. They result from inefficient valves causing retrograde or backflow of the blood.
Varicosities cause leg swelling, leg fatigue, pain, eczema, bruising and ulceration.
For severe varicosities, a duplex ultrasound is requested to check the patency and sufficiency of blood circulation of the legs.
If only peripheral vessels are affected, conservative and non-invasive treatments are available. These will include compression stockings, leg exercises, leg elevation and sclerotherapy.A diet high in fiber and vitamin C is also advised.
Sclerotherapy is a method wherein a hyperosmolar solution is injected into the affected vein.The solution safely corrodes the lining of the abnormal vessel causing it to slowly disintegrate and disappear. Treatment can be spaced 2 weeks apart until all varicosities are removed.
Spider veins are smaller varicosities. Aside from sclerotherapy, these can also be treated with NDYag lasers. Usually, it takes around 3 to 5 sessions to remove spider veins/varicosities/telangiectasias with lasers.
